Modern Investing

A search on the word “modern” returns sources on modern living, family, eating, health, furniture and an entire image gallery of modern homes both inside and out, almost a fixation. There is no mention of modern investing let alone modern money.

I asked Gemini why there are so many images for modern homes. The reasons are search prioritization, high volume and digital trends for real estate, home renovations and design inspiration. There is also a reference to recent home listings that look too perfect. Are we preoccupied with having a modern home and not enough on having adequate investments?

Most people aren’t searching on modern investing because the content that is served is not appealing or inspiring with cartoonish characters, graphs and obvious AI-generated images. Even I couldn’t come up with an image that reflects what modern-day investing should represent.

To build a profile or rendering of what modern investing should look like, let’s start with what it even means. Modern investing is defined by using digital platforms and tools to build diversified, personalized portfolios based on proven long-term strategies with a strong focus on aligning investments with personal values and goals. It emphasizes risk management through asset allocation and diversification along with utilizing tax-efficient strategies.

More people are investing than ever before. There is now a lower barrier to entry than buying a house. The guidance and where you find it, however, is changing.

You will likely not find the high-quality content with a Google search. It’s going underground so to speak. Video content via YouTube, evidence-based articles published on websites and sophisticated planning tools via secure platforms is how modern investing is evolving. The informative and educational content is moving away from mainstream visibility into specialized, independent spaces to foster authenticity and personalization and to avoid the scrutiny from social media.

How you plan and manage your personal finances including investments is becoming even more personal. It is moving further away from the one-size-fits-all approach. The best way to navigate modern-day investing is to find the people, resources, content and advice that resonates with you. By staying curious and trying new methods and technologies, it will eventually lead to something you can identify with. It may take time to find what that is.

The most daunting challenge that modern investors face is the sheer speed and volume of information. It’s finding the right balance and resources for the actions you want to take. This takes a careful curation of reliable sources to match your investing and finance preferences that at first can be overwhelming.

Let me take you back to 2020 when CPA and tax preparation firms were woefully not prepared for digital documents. I remember dropping off our tax documents in the hall outside the office door with an e-mail they were out there, not exactly secure but the best they could do at the time given the circumstances. By 2021 tax portals had become more widely adopted.

In 2022, I had to upload significant documents for our CPA in California due to the sale of our home and our move to Chicago. My understanding of portals is that it should take a few minutes to upload the files depending on the connection and the volume of users. That year it was taking me hours to upload the documents with some timing out that I had to resubmit. It took me something like 8 hours to get the documents uploaded.

By the end, I was so frustrated that I vowed to find a new firm locally for the next season as I was convinced the problem lied with the firm. The next year, I was ready to upload everything to the new firm’s portal, and it wouldn’t even let me begin. Could the problem actually be on my end? Indeed, it was after I logged in from my newer Window’s laptop and successfully uploaded everything in seconds. The long-running MacBook could no longer interface with modern technology.

In coming weeks, I’ll share more of what modern investing looks like so we can get a better picture of what we should expect and know to curate our own investing playlist.
